Evidence found everywhere from ancient Egypt to Rome and China shows that mastiffs have been around for thousands of years. The more modern day Mastiff hails from England where the breed almost went extinct after World War II, before it was built back up with the help of breeders in the United States. Once used as entertainment in dog fights for aristocrats or as extra muscle on the battlefield, Mastiffs today are still courageous and strong—they’ve just got a bit of a softer side.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Mastiffs make wonderful companions because of their patient and affectionate nature. And their loyalty knows no bounds, which is why they’re very protective of those they love, making it essential to train and socialize them from a young age. We’ve rounded up the most popular Mastiff names of the year from our enormous Rover.com database of dog names nationwide. Mastiff Name Trends
It should come as no surprise that the monumental size of this breeds has had an impact on the names that are chosen for them by their families. As you can see, there are a plethora of names that touch upon their strength and stature, including Moose, Tank, Goliath, Rambo, and Bear.
We also see a big influx of mythology-inspired names, probably because of this breed’s majestic traits and dignified appearance. The most popular ones include Apollo, Zeus, Hercules, and Athena.
Mastiff Name Advice
If you’re having trouble deciding, keep in mind that great Mastiff names can come from many different sources of inspiration, such as your favorite singer, movies, athletes, your favorite cuisine, or even dog breed history. For example, your puppy might sport a famous singer’s name like Elton or a cuisine-themed moniker like Samosa.
Another consideration when choosing your Mastiff name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When you’re teaching your new dog to respond to commands like sit, stay, or come, you’ll want to be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid puppy names that sound like a common dog training cue, such as “Bit,” which could easily be misheard as “sit.”
Of course, what matters most is that the dog name you choose rolls off your tongue. The best Mastiff names will make you happy. We’re fans of the “backdoor test” for dog name selection. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: stand at the back door and call out your new dog‘s potential name. Saying “Willow, it’s time for dinner!” or “Simba, leave it!” helps take the name out of your imagination and into reality.
