According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Lhasa Apsos have been around for over a thousand years. Often found at palaces and Buddhist monasteries in the mountains, this breed is associated with the Dalai Lama, and became established in America when they were given as gifts by the Fourteenth Dalai Lama in the 1940s.
Known for their smarts and confidence, this breed tends to be silly and affectionate with loved ones, but more aloof when it comes to strangers. We’ve rounded up the most popular Lhasa Apso names of the year from our enormous Rover.com database of dog names nationwide. Yes, these are real names given by Lhasa Apso owners, ranked in order of popularity. Did your dog’s name make the list?

Lhasa Apso Name Trends
It seems that these pups have a penchant for sweet tooth-inspired names. As you can see, there are a plethora of names that are candy-inspired, including Sugar, Muffin, Peaches, Cookie, Honey, and Oreo. I mean, they are as cute as a cupcake (that should have been on the list!).
We also see a big influx of silly names referring to their cute and fluffy appearance—it is pretty hard to ignore their adorableness. The most popular ones include Teddy, Paws, Gizmo, Baby, and Bear.
Lhasa Apso Name Advice
If you’re having trouble deciding, keep in mind that great Lhasa Apso names can come from many different sources of inspiration, such as your favorite super hero, books, musicians, your favorite flower, or even dog breed history. For example, your puppy might sport a famous hero’s name like She-Ra or a foliage-themed moniker like Fern.
Another consideration when choosing your Lhasa Apso name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When you’re teaching your new dog to respond to commands like sit, stay, or come, you’ll want to be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid puppy names that sound like a common dog training cue, such as “Bit,” which could easily be misheard as “sit.”
Of course, what matters most is that the dog name you choose rolls off your tongue. The best Lhasa Apso names will make you happy. We’re fans of the “backdoor test” for dog name selection. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: stand at the back door and call out your new dog‘s potential name. Saying “Minnie, it’s time for dinner!” or “Romeo, leave it!” helps take the name out of your imagination and into reality.
