With an ancestry that dates back to the ancient Greeks and the height of the Roman Empire, the modern Cane Corso descends from the molossoid dogs of Ancient Rome that were brought back to Italy. Though excellent at hunting and guarding farmsteads, Corsi numbers dwindled and they were nearly extinct until a group of devoted Italians banded together to save the breed—with the pups eventually making their way to the United States in 1988.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Corsi are eager to please and incredibly loyal to their loved ones—but they also tend to be willful, so they need to have an experienced owner who knows how to handle them. We’ve rounded up the most popular Cane Corso names of the year from our enormous Rover.com database of dog names nationwide. We also see a big influx of names that seem to give a nod to the breed’s ancient Greek roots. Zeus is at the top of the list, and other popular ones include Apollo, Atlas, Thor, Athena, Titan, and Hercules. Not only do these names highlight the Corsi power, but they also look back at the breed’s heritage, which makes them extra special.
Cane Corso Name Advice
If you’re having trouble deciding, keep in mind that great Cane Corso names can come from many different sources of inspiration, such as your favorite color, songs, celebrities, your heritage, or even a favorite figure from history. For example, your puppy might sport a celebrity’s name like Madonna or a song-inspired moniker like Jolene.
Another consideration when choosing your Cane Corso’s name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When you’re teaching your new dog to respond to commands like sit, stay, or come, you’ll want to be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid puppy names that sound like a common dog training cue, such as “Bit,” which could easily be misheard as “sit.”
Of course, what matters most is that the dog name you choose rolls off your tongue. The best Cane Corso names will make you happy. We’re fans of the “backdoor test” for dog name selection. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: stand at the back door and call out your new dog‘s potential name. Saying “Moose, it’s time for dinner!” or “Juno, leave it!” helps take the name out of your imagination and into reality.
