Can dogs eat duck? You might have wondered this if your dog begged for a bite of the duck you were cooking up a festive holiday meal. If humans can eat duck, is it also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is yes, dogs can safely eat duck. In fact, duck can be a good addition to your dog’s diet; although, due to its high price, you might want to save duck for special one-off treats.

There are also a couple of safety precautions you’ll want to take before feeding duck to your dog.

As always, you must ask your vet before sharing any human foods with your pet. Here’s what you should know about feeding duck to dogs.

How Is Duck Good For Dogs?

You might have noticed that duck is often an ingredient used in commercial dog food brands. This is because duck meat is high in protein.

Duck also contains a high level of iron, along with amino acids that can benefit your dog’s muscles.

Firstly, make sure that you cook the duck in a very plain fashion. Avoid the temptation to add lots of extra herbs and spices to the duck, as you might end up including some ingredients that are poisonous to dogs or could upset their digestive system.

Next, render as much fat as possible out of the duck while you’re roasting it. This is because a high fat diet is not appropriate for domestic dogs and could bring on a case of canine obesity.

When serving duck to your dog, it’s best to show caution and shred the meat off of the bones yourself. This is because there is a chance that a bone could splinter while your dog is chewing on it.

Also, avoid serving any of the duck skin to your dog. This is due to the higher levels of fat contained there.

Finally, just like feeding any human food to a dog, be aware that if you feed them too much duck, then they might begin to shun their usual daily meals. So it’s best to keep serving duck only as a special treat every now and then.
